September 2007 - Vol. 5 No 1

Welcome to our September2007 Newsletter. We are mindful that the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act 2007 comes into effect tomorrow. While we believe everybody receiving this has either:

  • Subscribed through our website
  • Made contact previously regarding our services, or
  • Been receiving these newsletters for several years . . .

. . . we do want to ensure we are compliant.

We have no desire for you to receive this if it is unwelcome, so if you do wish to unsubscribe, please do so here.

Here are a few honest facts to help you decide:

  • The newsletters do have a commercial interest at heart, however, we try to give you entertaining and informative information, mainly about broad safety management issues.
  • We could send you boring, trite safety information in a timely fashion, but we tend to deliver the occasional opinionated rant at random intervals instead.
  • We would like to think you hang on our every wise word, but we know you only look at the humorous pictures. Come on, it’s true.
  • We aim to be quarterly, but seldom struggle to 3 per annum.

If you would like another person to have the opportunity to receive this, please forward it onto them so that they can subscribe.

In this edition:

They are using some very uncompromising words, so there is real hope. After all, we still take notice of what happens in the UK, so good on ‘em for getting real . . . [ more ]
  • Paper OHS systems vs electronic ones – pros and cons
Yes, this is unashamed self promotion, but we have tried to be honest. We can provide both types of system, but after 20 years of auditing safety, we know that safety management comes down to hard graft, regardless of what systems you use. In a nutshell, there are no magic wands. Unless you have the key safety management commitments in place, it doesn’t matter whether you use paper manuals, the latest gizmos, or nothing at all. On the other hand, you’d be mad not to get a good system . . . [ more ]
  • And talking about "Key safety management commitments: What are they?"
If you had to throw away everything else and keep just two safety management elements, without which you would be wasting your time, what would they be? Would you include hazard management, with the hierarchy of controls? What about training and supervision? Procedures, manuals and databases? Accident reporting and investigation? We venture to suggest it would be none of the above . . . [ more ]
