May 2006 - Vol. 4 No 1

Welcome to our May Newsletter. In it, we bring a digest of safety and health information that is most likely to be of interest in developing and maintaining successful safety systems, with particular emphasis on ACC, audits, DoL rules and regulations, training and keeping abreast of current trends.

If you would like another person to have the opportunity to receive this, please forward it onto them so that they can subscribe. If you wish to unsubscribe, click here.

In this edition:

  • Safe society vs individual rights
It is a natural result of workplace safety legislation that the employer will be found wanting in a large proportion of accident cases, because the authorities will find the employer could have done more in terms of what is practicable and reasonable.

Of course the employer must be primarily responsible for its employees. But is there room for expanding the realm of employee accountability and putting them more in control of their own behaviour? Read our first ever SafetyBlog. [ more ]

  • "SafetyBase", your current choice in OHS management systems
Web based and easy to use. When our clients evaluate the system, they are always surprised by how adaptable it is. One of our recent clients, a global company, decided our premium "Distinction Edition", which complies with ACC Tertiary SMP (AND does the real deal with AS/NZS4801), was perfect for both their Australian and NZ operations.

An Auckland based import company with two locations, low safety risks and no desire to achieve ACC approval, went for our budget "Core Edition" . They wanted compliance without frills and it suited their profile.

All editions look and feel the same. They simply prompt you for more data and actions, as you ascend the levels. There are 5 editions plus a Custom option to choose from.
    • Create your own roles, people and locations
    • Monitor current safety activities on the Dashboard screen
    • Keep track of actions, open files and employee consultation issues
    • Get e-mail reminders and a personal Task List

  • ACC's New Incentive Scheme
ACC is currently introducing the latest in their array of safety incentive schemes. Called the Workplace Safety Discounts scheme, it is designed for small employers with annual liable earnings up to $380,000, which equates to 10 employees or less. There will be a flat 10% discount if the employer can show evidence that they have relevant "prior experience" in managing health and safety or have attended a relevant safety training course.

The employer will be subjected to an administrative audit by ACC and a proportion will be given an on site audit by one of the existing panel of independent auditors. The discount is valid for 3 years, however, an annual declaration will be required. Don't get too excited unless you are in one of the following higher risk industries: Agriculture, forestry, fishing, construction, road freight transport and motor trades. These are the "pilot" industries. Application forms should already have reached these industries.

Want to know if you're in shape for a discount on your ACC levy? Call (09) 535 4355 or e-mail us.

  • Safety Humour
Next to SafetyBase, these are our most popular pages on the web site. The "hits" come from all over the world. Recent months have seen some new pages added, due to the variety of material you kind folks submit. Last time, we added a page for "jaw droppers", called WOW.

This month, we decided to start two new pages called LUCKY! and FAKES. The LUCKY page is dedicated to truly lucky or fluky escapes, while FAKES is where we will put all the set-ups and graphically "enhanced" images. (There's a bit of intuition involved with some, but we think we get it right most times).

Thanks this edition to Patrick Hodgson (UK), Dawn Plaisance (Louisiana, USA), Jacqui Hunt (Plymouth, UK), Sheri Suckling (Auckland NZ), Ray Wooster, QLD, Aust Gordon Anderson (Kumeu, NZ) and my son, Ben Lawrence for their contributions.
