  • First Aid for Workplaces – A Good Practice Guide – September 2009
The Department of Labour issued a final set of First Aid Guidelines in September last year, following withdrawal of the Factories and Commercial Premises (First Aid) Regulations 1985. It introduces the concept of risk assessment in determining what facilities and personnel you require. So why replace something mandatory with Guidelines? And what’s all that about risk assessment? • Do you have the “engagement” of your employees?
Tired of safety gimmicks and flavour of the month safety campaigns? Ever wondered why complicated processes and procedures don’t change the accident rate?  Don’t blame employees, they’re probably about the same bunch of folk as the next employer. Your problem could be the level of engagement those employees feel with the company. Chances are, the messages they are receiving do not encourage a sense of ownership and responsibility. Is safety about controlling and restricting people’s behaviour, or is it about encouraging them to have more choice and responsibility? [ more ]

  • Simon’s SafetyBlog: Safety and Common Sense
    • Santa Parades: Damn those people with white coats. The more they number, the more mindless idiots join their ranks. I am referring to event organisers who use the mantra of “elf and safety” to justify stupid safety rules. Every year, myself and a few volunteer firefighter colleagues give out lollies in our local Santa Parade. Last Christmas, we were told we couldn’t even place them in the hands of the little darlings “coz of elf and safety”. Read my blog to find out why these people are so stupid and why we should ignore anyone with a white coat and clipboard. Read Simon’s SafetyBlog

    • A blizzard of bluster: Just recently, during the icy blasts in the UK, the Houses of Parliament reverberated to the collective trumpeting of a handful of reactive Lords and Ministers of the Crown who jumped off their perches in hysteria. Apparently, safety authorities had warned that people clearing snow on public footpaths might be liable for prosecution if someone slipped and hurt themselves. I have often been outspoken against the misuse of health and safety but on this occasion, I’m firmly with the authorities. In fact, I hope the do-gooders get what they deserve. Why?
