The HSNO Act was dated 1996! Some of us are vaguely aware of it, but unless you deal in "New Organisms", chances are, it hasn't impacted you yet. That's about to change, with hazardous substances coming under the Act this April.

OHS system that interacts?

Yes. Last year, we developed such a system up to a demo level. It gives reminders, sends e-mails, helps you to generate actions, reviews and plans as well as maintaining your system. It complies with all 3 ACC levels, OSH and NZS 4801 and will integrate into your organizational levels, roles and responsibilities, which are user defined.

The concept was shown at the Safety Expo and created more interest than we dared hope for. Further development is needed, however, the concept has taken shape - a system that is easy to use but is so well thought out that it almost anticipates your every need.

The name is SafetyBase, which we have registered. We are looking for partners (employers), who share the same vision and want to help with further development. There would be a share of the development cost, depending on the size of your organization. The benefit to you is direct input and ultimately ability to use permanently a system that really works with you. The cost will be less than the final market price.

We are looking for perhaps 5-10 partners. If you would like to talk about this project under no obligation and in confidence, please e-mail us or call (09) 535 4355.

Do you need to get certified?

At last, the HSNO Act is coming to a place near you. In April, the Act takes over management of Hazardous Substances, which is almost an everyday item in comparison to the exotic "New Organisms" that have so far been ERMA's domain.

If you have an existing Dangerous Goods, Toxic Substances, Explosives or Pesticides licence, it is about to be replaced. You are going to need to get a certificate from a Test Certifier, not an inspector from the local OSH or Council office.

Some of the conditions have changed and the process will be more like an audit, looking at not only your premises but also your administrative controls and other procedures. You may well have to appoint Approved Handlers, who also need certifying.

WSE Audit - a peek under the bonnet

ACC have made a new departure with this. Last time, we told you about the moves to target employers with above average claims records and potentially put 50% loadings on their premiums. Well, it has started. ACC Injury Prevention Consultants are working with selected employers right now. As predicted, the helping phase may turn a bit unpleasant if no results are forthcoming, in which case they will dispatch an auditor.

The audit will be action based. That means no reassurances or nice words. Just 'show me the evidence' and confidential interviews with the people who know - your employees. Three areas of safety management have to be satisfied and an 80% pass mark required to avoid relegation as a sinner.

For more information about the audit - and a revelation about a grouping who has a poor claims record and shouldn't, follow this link.
