As in all areas of knowledge, there is a spectrum of abilities and quality within the safety industry. The NZ Safety Council has now established a professional register by linking with the Quality Society of Australasia. Executive Director Dave Calvert reports:
After an exhaustive and exhausting process we have our first group of Registered Safety Professionals. They are as follows:
Dave Calvert, Simon Lawrence, Andy Loader, Colleen Oldman-Barrett, Wyn Fon Thomas, John Beattie, Shiu Singh, Rene Darier, Gerard Jackson. Jodie Wright and Gary Van Rensburg are recognised as Associate Safety Professionals
We congratulate them all and know they will act as a great benchmark for all those that follow.
Mike Cosman, OSH National Operations
Manager made the awards and has shown a keen interest
in this professional recognition initiative.
All NZSC RSPs have a broad width of experience in industry.
After moving through a number of management and technical
roles, they were attracted to Occupational Safety/Health
and/or Environmental Management as a career.
Eight have served as Corporate HSE
Managers with major organisations or Multi-Nationals.
Nine are self-employed consultants and two are Corporate
SHE practitioners. We have also placed on the Register
two Associates, who, whilst academically qualified,
need some OSH&E experience, so will be designated
as Associate Safety Professionals for the time being.
The RSP Register will be available
to all on our website for checking by anyone.
At the formation of the NZ Safety Council, one of our
key objectives was to raise the level of Professionalism
among Safety, Health and Environmental [SH&E] Practitioners.
By launching our Register, with strict entry criteria and ongoing proof of 'Continuing Professional Development', we intend to attract many more SH&E practitioners to apply to be an RSP.
Registration is for one year, with
a 'Practising Licence' issued each year, once confirmation
of Continuing Professional Development is confirmed,
to continue on the Register. Membership of the Register
will be promoted to the business community, thus giving
a level of assurance that a RSP is competent to carry
out the role. This is already being promoted to some
recruitment agencies.
We will be contacting all known SH&E people, both
from Government Departments, Councils, as well as business
and the 'not for profit' sector. Thanks also to Safeguard
for featuring an Article on this milestone.
From the OSH perspective, our Register will enable OSH
staff to point anyone at the NZSC Register if needing
SH&E assistance.
We also intend to discuss the Registration process with OSH, recommending that OSH Inspectors apply to be RSPs. This has already been promoted to MSA for their Inspectors.
Thank you to all members for your
continuing support. We look forward to receiving your
RSP Applications.
